Salon Evening at Astri Prugger Design

Announcing our new Away Day series

…your chance to try something different this summer – a day out with other women that is easy-paced, that has lots of variety, and that makes philosophy accessible, fun and epicurean. Cost: $50 for members and $60 for non-members (Price includes lunch and all materials).

Away Day 1: Making Sense of the Senses
Saturday 27th June 2009, 10am - 4pm
Delving into our sense of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell, we explore how some key philosophical ideas link to sensory awareness. While engaging in three practical activities – walking round the lake, looking for the punctum in photographs, and sharing a delicious lunch together – we ask how the senses heighten our engagement with the world around us. We also consider how our senses shape the way each of us interacts with people and places.

Away Day 2: Slow Philosophy
Saturday September 12th, 2009, 10am - 4pm
Over the course of this day we consider what it means to 'slow down' in a world that seems to be moving ever faster. Taking inspiration from 'the slow food movement,' we ground our discussion in practical activities such as walking, journaling and wine pairing. We examine what it takes to move at a pace that fits with our own needs, but goes against the common flow.

Open Day at The Nurtury on Sunday June14th

You are invited to attend wine women and philosophy's second Open Day which is being held at The Nurtury, in Lakefield, Gore - between 11am and 4pm - on Sunday June 14th, 2009. An easy drive from Montreal, the day is free and all are welcome to come along to find out more about our beautiful premises and location, as well as about our exciting wwp weekend line-up for Autumn 2009. This is an opportunity to see first hand whether The Nurtury would be a suitable place to go on one of our artist or writer retreats, or to host your own retreats, meetings or events. It will also give you the chance to meet some of our salonnières, and to find out if a wwp weekend is for you. As with all wine women and philosophy occasions, a welcoming glass awaits you.

Next salon evening to take place at Astri Prugger Design on May 12th

You are invited to attend wine women and philosophy's next salon evening which is being held at Astri Prugger Design - located at 322 Victoria Avenue, Westmount, H3Z 2M8 Montreal - on Tuesday May 12th, 2009 from 7.30 to 9.30pm.

The evening is free, and all are welcome to come along to find out more about this exciting new venture aimed at women.

"A rose is a rose is a rose"

Our first members salon evening is scheduled for Thursday the 16th of April from 7.30pm to 9pm. The quote that will start off the evening is Gertrude Stein's " A rose is a rose is a rose." A personal invite will be sent out to all our membership friends via email. Thanks to all our members for making our first members salon evening such a great success. Over a glass of Prosecco, Linnet spoke of Gertrude Stein's life in Paris and offered some clues from her biographical details that might shed light on her most famous phrase, "A rose is a rose is a rose." As one of the challenges of the evening was to experiment with different kinds of conversation, we then broke into pairs to discuss our interpretations of the phrase. Using a 'pay it forward' approach, we then made new pairs - building, each time we moved on, on previous conversations to create a shared story around this enigmatic phrase. In this way, our conversations became a living exemplar of the Latin roots of the word, conversation - that is, to turn around (verser) together (con). The evening wrapped up over tea and brownies - the latter a culinary tribute to Stein's life-long companion, Alice B Toklas.
